Where is Mount Fuji? Where is Nakatosa?

Fuji-san is probably one of the most famous touristic destinations of Japan. It is about 2 hours from Tokyo and can be reached by train, too. Our train went from Gotenba, about 20 km from Mount Fuji to Shinjuku station in Tokyo.

Nakatosa is in Kochi prefencure, on Japan’s fourth biggest island, Shikoku. Shikoku is connected to Honshu, Japan biggest island, with two bridges and can be reached by

train or bus from Tokyo, Osaka and many other Japanese cities, but it would take several hours. From Tokyo it is an overnight drive by bus. We were so lucky to have collected enough miles with our previous flights from and to Japan with Japan Airlines (JAL) that we had free flights between Tokyo Haneda Airport and Kochi Airport. The one-way flight takes about 1 1/4 hours. However, as we had to cross whole Tokyo to go to Haneda, it took us maybe altogether 4 hours. From Kochi there are trains along the coast to the south. By express train it takes you about 45 minutes.

What can you do at Mount Fuji?

Well, you would be satisfied only watching it all day. Each of its 3776 m are impressive! Unfortunately, on many days of the year it disappears in the mist. As it is the only such huge mountain in the area it attracts all kind of clouds very quickly and from the formation of the clouds around it you can easily guess the weather for the next hours. The best chance to see it is in winter when the air is very clear. In July it can be fully seen only two days in average.
Its silhouette is very interesting as you can

see and distinguish the different eruptions in the past by this volcano, which is dormant for such a long time now. (It can explode again at any time...!)
You can climb it, but only in July and August - something we still have to do.

On the north side of Mount Fuji there is the Five Lake District with beautiful landscape and plenty of touristic infrastructure.

What can you do in Nakatosa?

Nakatosa is a little traditional fishing village on the south coast of Shikoku. If you want to see how Japan was 30 years ago, without being surrounded by tourists everyday, you should visit here. It is very quiet and offers small shops, a fish market, a sake brewery and a tiny art-museum. Village life is not at all hectic like Tokyo and you would soon find yourself settled in its relaxing calmness. The area is famous for its strawberries which are always fresh, even in winter. Of course, you’ll be able to try lots of fresh fish everyday. Little fishing boats leave the harbour every morning and the fish market starts around noon when the fishermen come back from the sea and the fish is prepared for sale.

Where did we stay in Nakatosa?

We stayed at the Kuroiso Honjin Ryokan, a modern and new but traditional Japanese hotel. We enjoyed the stay very much. Beautiful view over the bay, superb food with a warm Japanese breakfast and a abundant tasty dinner and - we love it - a nice hot spring bath for relaxing. The rooms are traditional Japanese with tatami mats on the floor. Being on the top floor we enjoyed the tasteful high ceiling.

The hotel offers a free pick-up service rom the railway station.
