How to get to Kyushu |

Although the famous bullet train Shinkansen brings you directy from Tokyo to Hakata in Kyushu, we decided to fly and took one of those packages offered by the airlines again, this time by ANA. The package includes the flights to/from the destinations of your choice within Kyusyu, a rental car and accommodation, which you can choose from hotels or Ryokans of different classes in various locations. This allows you to plan your own original travel route as you wish. Once you are in Kyushu, a car would be the best way of moving. During our trip we went to quite remote places where you may have trouble to reach by public transportation. Big cities such as

Hakata (Fukuoka), Nagasaki, Kumamoto etc., are of course well connected by train. We flew to Kumamoto in the middle of the island and took the plane back from Miyazaki in the south east.

What to do in Kyushu |

Mystic, green, warm - only a few adjectives for Kyushu island. In the very south of the country (only the Okinawa islands are more south) it offers very different environment and landscapes. Even if you have seen many shrines and temples, you may not have seen them in a mediterrenean setting, surrounded by palm trees and spoiled by the sun. Like other islands in Japan, there are countless locations of natural hot springs in Kyusyu, often with interesting volcanoes near by. Here you can do sight seeing every day and enjoy your hot bath every evening.

Kyushu is supposed to be the place where Japanfs emperor dynasty was originally founded thousands of years ago. Thus, you can find many mysterious places which remind you of old sagas and fables. An interesting trip into Japanfs old history. Several national parks complete the picture and make Kyushu an attractive destination for your hiking trips. Most famous is the Aso National Park, a group of volcanoes around the famous Maount Aso.

gKyushuh meansgnine provicesh and it used to have nine domains of feudal clans. Today Kyushu consists of seven prefectures: Fukuoka, Oita, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Miyazaki, Kagoshima. Nagasaki city, which had the only gwindowh to the western world for 220 years from 1639 during Japanfs national isolation period, and was hit by the second atomic bomb in the WWII, is perhaps internationally most well known. Beppu in Oita is one of the most famous onsen (hot springs) area in Japan. Sakurajima, an extremely lively volcano which has small eruptions every day, is the most exciting thing to see in Kagoshima... However, we skipped all these very famous places and travelled mainly in Kumamoto and Miyazaki prefectures, putting emphaiss on landscapes and smaller interesting spots.
