How we went there

We probably do not have to tell you how to get to London. There is a very good flight connection of 1.5 hours from Stuttart. This time we were really lucky for two reasons: the weather was beautiful when we flew in in the morning and our airplane took a route just cruising over downtown London - what a fantastic view!

What we did in London
08/2008

Apart from the usual shopping and music/theatre events, there were two highlights this time: Kew Gardens and visiting an English countyside pub with  Sally and Brian.

'Treetop Walkway'
Let's climb to the
treetops...!

Having not been there for such a long time and also encouraged by the perfect weather, we decided to visit the famous Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew,  south-west of London. Although we found it a bit too expensive to get in, the whole area is utterly vast and there is a lot to see. This year, their trees are on focus. One of the highlights is ‘Treetop Walkway’, an attraction which

enables you to walk through the tree tops - very exciting! We also loved the rest of the park, including the very hot and humid Palm House and a little Japanese garden.

The Donkey pub

On Sunday, Sally and Brian, our long-time friends living in a suburb of London, took us to a ride to the countryside for an authentic British Sunday pub lunch - with all you need, such as Yorkshire Pudding. The food was excellent, the people were all nice and friendly and they actually had two donkeys around. After lunch we went for a walk nearby and enjoyed the fresh air. Thanks to Sally and Brian for such a wonderful day!

We arrived on Thursday morning and left on Monday morning so that we had plenty of time (basically, this was one half of our summer holiday) to enjoy London - its atmosphere, life and culture.
On Friday night, we went to Twickenham to meet our friends Sally and Brian with their daughter Lucy. Living on an island in the River Thames, they have their own boat and Brian kindly took us on board to a pub for dinner. As usual, we thoroughly enjoyed their company and the typical English country-side pub atmosphere. Great evening!

The London Eye

stunning gem of attraction that London can offer besides all the other great sights. Even though Rainer is usually not a big fan of painting art works, he found this collection really impressive. The interior decoration (furniture, curtains and wall papers, etc.) is also amazingly tasteful and charming, making its setting breath-takingly attractive.

Going to the pub by boat

We did not go for a power sight-seeing this time, but just enjoyed being there. However, one more highlight was the Wallace Collection, a private collection of art all kinds of historical treasures displayed in a historic family house, open to the public for free  (donations are requested). It is another

Also, don’t miss The Wallace Restaurant, situated in the glass-covered atrium of the house, serving great food in a bright and stylish environment. Highly recommended!
