What we did |
 |
 |

Wine, good food and little villages in an old German style - that’s all about the area. So relaxing... Thanks to the fact that we were especially lucky with the weather. We started off on Friday morning, first driving to Wuerzburg, where we had our own city walk. Highlights were the cathedral and the residence. Do not forget to go inside the residence and experience all the amazing aspects of its interior. You need to pay entrance fee, but then you can enjoy a well performed guided tour for free. Very amusing and recommenable, especially as you will

be able to enter rooms where you are not allowed to enter on your own. You will be impressed by the enormous residence, and it’s very educating to see how people lived in those days. In the evening we drove to the hotel in Marktbreit, a very typical tiny village for this area: gates to the town, little alleys, old houses in carcass style, a small market place and access to the Main river.
Next day, we did a tour throughout a few little villages: starting in Dettelbach, visiting the monastery Muensterschwarzach, Prichsenstadt, Castell, and Iphofen.

We saw many people doing bicycle tours along the Main. It would have been lovely.
Dettelbach has an old town wall and vineyards almost reaching into the town. A perfect starting point for our tour. Muensterschwarzach is a huge monastery with a big church and lots of buildings around. All in all quite impressive for a stop over on the way to Prichsenstadt. Don’t miss Prichsenstadt! It is probably the most pretty and attractive village we had seen on that day. The gate to the village opens the way towards an alley of houses painted in beautiful pastel colours. It was so nice to walk around. There are many cafes or restaurants if you’d like to have a break.

Castell is not that spectacular. The only attractive spot is a small area around the Castell-family’s castle, but other villages in this region would be much nicer. Iphofen is one of the centers of wine making in the region and home to many famous wineries. We stopped at the shop of the Ruck winery and bought some of their award-winning wines. Nice people - apparently it was a local holiday, but still they opened the shop for us. The town is very picturesque and we had a longer walk there.

Where we stayed |

Hotel Loewen in Marktbreit is the second oldest hotel in Bavaria. It is very well situated at the entrance of the town in a quiet environment. A good place to stay!
All the staff members were very friendly and nice, especially the waitresses in the restaurant, and indeed, we had wonderful breakfast and dinner there. The room was spacious, modern and comfortable. Very reasonable for the quality - highly recommended.
