How to get to Seychelles

The Seychelles are situated a bit south of the equator, off the East coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. Only Britisch Airways, Air France and Air Seychelles have regular connections to and from the island of Mahé, the main and biggest island of the Seychelles. We booked a package using a German charter airline. Basically, the Seychelles want to avoid mass tourism. Only a limited number of airlines therefore are flying there.

If you are not staying on the main island, you will be transferred with a domestic flight of Air Seychelles in a tiny little airplane, which is quite an experience by itself. Boat transfers are possible, too, but it takes time, e.g. 4 hours between Mahé and Praslin.

What to do at the Seychelles

Seychelles is all about relaxing, nature and beaches. You can just relax at the beach or you make excursions by boat to the nearby islands.
Praslin (see map to the right), the island we stayed at, is the second largest island of the Seychelles. Nevertheless, it is still very quiet and

natural. Even “Ste. Anne”, the most populated place, is so small that it cannot be called a “town”, but a “village”.
Praslin has a famous nature reserve, the Vallée de Mai, where  a great number of extremely rare coconut trees are still growing. The “coco d’mer” is the biggest existing coconut and can only be found on two islands of the Seychelles, Praslin and Cousin, in the entire world. You can spend a half day hiking around in the reserve.
Praslin is also home of one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world, Anse Lazio. Anse Lazio was the place of the ‘Bacardi’-rum advertisement some years ago.

Wherever you are on Praslin, you will see another island on the horizon. You can do plenty of trips to those islands, each of them famous for something: rare birds, snorkeling, stone formations, giant turtles and many other things.
Snorkeling is great, don’t miss it. After we did it,

Chiko just said she felt like in a dream. Plenty of coulourful fish in various sizes are swimming around you, single ones and whole swarms - absolutely fantastic!!
Each island has its own way of moving: On Praslin you can take the bus (it is an adventure!), on La Digue it is flat enough to take the bike, some of the smaller islands you can walk.
But, what we found most impressive after all, were the local people of the Seychelles. You will easily start calming down immediately: everybody is moving slowly, taking things easy and there is no stress wherever you go. You forget the rest of the world and can dive away from everyday’s life.

Where we stayed

We booked the hotel from Germany. Acajou Hotel offers only a limited number of rooms which makes the hotel intimate. Everything is built of mahogany (= Acajou) and the garden is full of beauticul plants with so many birds making a lot of noise! It is directly by Cote d’Or, a long and wide beach. The village Cote d’Or, where you can find a bank (ATM) and a little super- market, is in a 10-min-walk. Very practical.
All in all we liked it very much. Unfortunately, it does not have a homepage
