Where is Shuzenji?

Shuzenji is located in the middle of Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. It is one of the famous hot-spring (onsen) resorts, although in most of Japanese cities you can find hot springs. It is nicely situated in a valley surrounded by all kinds of trees, especially beautiful bamboo bushes.

About 2-3 hours train ride from Tokyo (partly along the sea side), the town is perfect for some relaxing days off the crowded big cities.


What can you do in Shuzenji?

Main sights are Shuzenji Temple and Shuzenji Shrine. Apart from that there are lots of possibilities for hiking trips to waterfalls and buddha statues. In 45 minutes walking distance, but also accessible by bus, there is a big park called “Niji no sato”, which shows typical features of Japanese, Canadian and English villages. Fun, but not a must...


Where we stayed

The Asaba Ryokan (traditional Japanese hotel) is a class of its own. You have to be used to Japanese hotel prices, but if you are ready to value what you receive - do it! It’s an experience. Service, food, decoration, hot spring bath - everything makes the stay a real event. What is most amazing is, how well they know what you want right now. When they serve you, you would just feel comfortable - never flattering, nor pompus, let alone meddlesome...
