London - What we discovered this time

Portrait Restaurant

The new travelguide had the right tip: The great view from the restaurant of The National Portrait Gallery is well worth enjoying your tea up there. The restaurant with nice architecture offers lovely atmosphere and probably the best view over London - Lord Nelson on Trafalgar Square just in front of you, Westminster with Big Ben in the background, aircraft approaching to Heathrow... try it out at the Portrait Restaurant.

All the Millennium stuff

Last time we were in London was 2000. But what we missed that year were the attractions extra built up for that year - London Eye (the big wheel) and the Millennium Bridge.
A little walk helped us to discover both. From Embankment we crossed Hungerford Bridge (picture right) towards South Bank Center. After a tea in the “People’s Palace” Restaurant on the third floor of Royal Festival Hall, we walked on east-wards along the River Thames (picture right bottom).

After a 15-20 minutes walk you reach Tate Modern, a huge new museum of modern art, which is connected right theough to St. Paul’s Cathedral by the famous wobbly (!?) Millennium Bridge (picture left).

Well, the bridge is supposed to be a spectacular proof of engineering skills, though it does not look like or feel like that, when you are on it...
However, it was a nice walk over the Thames, anyway.

The travel guide

The travel guide we used this time was recommended by Amazon. Despite the fact that it fell apart after only a few days of use, we found it quite useful, with a few good hints for people who have spent some time in London already, e.g. on sight seeing, shopping, and dining (though the latter ones sometimes were a bit posh). However, the two features we present on this page were taken from that book!
The book’s lay out and design is very fancy with plenty of great pictures.
