Day 2 - Shoren-in/Honen-in/Ginkakuji/Kiyomizu/Kyoto Walk

>>back to overview

Ginkakuji

Lake and Mountain in the moonshine...

The Ginkakuji (= silver pavillon), has actually never been covered with silver despite its name.

It was erected as a residence for one of the Shoguns at the end of the 15th century. This Shogun, Yoshimasa, wanted to construct his own nice world in order to forget about the cruelty of the civil wars at that time. Unfortunately, he died before the residence was

finished. However, apart from the masses of tourists who stroll through the garden, today you can enjoy it a lot. There are plenty of details, emphasizing  beauty and peace of the nature.
Very interesting is the part of the garden made of tons of sand.

Kyoto is popular for school trips

Ginkakuji from the upper garden

near a lake that are shining in the moonlight. The upper part of the garden is in the style of a landscape garden. It is absolutely amazing how many kinds of moss are growing here. The various kinds of moss are explained in a show case in the garden.
Specialists in Japanese arts see Ginkakuji as the embodiment of the Japanese word yuugen, meaning ‘mysterious beauty and gracefulness’...
