How to get to Magi Onsen

>> back to overview

“Magi Onsen” is actually the name of the hot-spring-location with a solitary Ryokan (Japanese style hotel) where we stayed.  It belongs to a tiny village called Magi, in Otsuki City of Yamanashi Prefecture.
We went there by car, which took us only about one hour from Tokyo. It is absolutely amazing as within this one hour motorway drive you end up in the quietness of the real Japanese countryside, very quick and very relaxing.
Please find directions on the
Ryokan’s homepage.
Nearest train station (as well as name of the highway exit) is ‘Ohtsuki’. From there it takes about 20 minutes by car.

Where we stayed

The Magi Onsen Ryokan is a complex of several houses for guest rooms, restaurants, and the traditional hot-spring baths. They are tastfully laid out together with gardens of various sizes as well as

resting places. This entirely authentic Japanese-
styled complex offers plenty of interesting and nice little

corners with beautiful details. Altogether the style and architecture are so harmonious that we found it ideal for relaxing.
We thoroughly enjoyed tasty meals and the private Onsen bath tub, which is equipped in every room.
Additionally, the staff was very kind and attentive.

When we arrived around noon, they offered to provide us with some lunch, which we thankfully accepted after realising the near-by restaurant was closed.
The quite well-used room gave us the only negative impression. Obviously this Ryokan is very popular, but some refurbishment work would be definitely beneficial.
All in all we can truely recommend this place for a nice break out from Tokyo. However, the Ryokan itself is not the one we would say we have to visit again by all means...

Designed as a two-day trip, the goal was mainly to relax a bit and enjoy

the naturally hot water. So first, we had a look around the hotel. It was early April and we collected a lot of beautiful

impressions, especially thanks to the blooming cherry blossoms...

the first little shrine on the way

on that day, we enjoyed visiting the three little shrines along the ridge of the mountain and walking back through the little village - absolutely different from Tokyo, indeed!
After a while we came back to the Ryokan. From the top of the hill we had a great view over the complex.

After a lovely lunch with the traditional noodle dish in a room with the river view, we had a nice walk around the area. A slope leads up to a small mountain, from where you are supposed to have a great view of Mt. Fuji. Although it was too hazy to see Mt. Fuji

Crossing the river over an old wooden bridge was fun and we ended the day with a nice hot bath...
Another highly recommendable short escape from hectic Tokyo city life!
