How to get to Nikko?

Nikko is a historical city about 180km north of Tokyo. You can get there by train, Tobu Line from Asakusa, as we did when we went there in autumn 2000. However, this time we went by car, which takes about 2 hours form Tokyo if you are lucky enough not to end up in a traffic jam. But it makes sense to take a car, if you want to explore not only the various cultural sights in downtown Nikko, but also the nice mountain area around, including the Kegon Waterfall and Lake Chuzenji.
In the Nikko area there are plenty of places with hot springs, such as Oku-nikko and  Kinugawa, etc. Staying overnight at those places would be a good idea.

Nikko Area - our first target

Kegon Waterfall - the water falls down 100m from Lake Chuzenji into the valley.
View onto Lake Chuzenji through the coloured leaves...
The Nikko area is well known for wild Japanese monkeys. They can be very naughty, so you'd better keep away from them.... This one we saw, however, was peacefully busy cleaning himself...

Coloured leaves are so beautiful in autumn - the Japanese Indian Summer. Although we were a bit late, still some leaves had not fallen down and we enjoyed all

sorts of beautiful colours around Chuzenji Lake and Kegon Waterfall.

The very first important Shoguns from the Tokugawa-

family are enshrined here. They reunited the country at the beginning of the 17th century and closed it from external influence for about 260 years, until the Americans showed up in the 19th century....

You will find plenty of various temples and shrines in Nikko.
