Nikko is a historical city about 180km north of Tokyo. You can get there by train, Tobu Line from Asakusa, as we did when we went there in autumn 2000. However, this time we went by car, which takes about 2 hours form Tokyo if you are lucky enough not to end up in a traffic jam. But it makes sense to take a car, if you want to explore not only the various cultural sights in downtown Nikko, but also the nice mountain area around, including the Kegon Waterfall and Lake Chuzenji. In the Nikko area there are plenty of places with hot springs, such as Oku-nikko and Kinugawa, etc. Staying overnight at those places would be a good idea.
