Hakone in cold winter...

Snow covered hills of Hakone
Hakone Tozan Railway line

After a bit more than two hours of trip with  ordinary train service, we arrived in Ohiradai, one of many little onsen villages in the Hakone area. Everything covered with snow, it was so different from Tokyo and despite the coldness we found it  somehow pleasantly tranquil and peaceful...

Everything you need to relax:
 a nice onsen bath...

We were warmly welcomed in our small and cozy Ryokan, where we throughly enjoyed the open-air natural hot bath, the onsen, and  indulged ourselves with lovely meals, which were served in our own room.

After two days of rather heavy snowfall, which not only

paralysed local bus services but also caused most of tourist attractions and museums closed, the sun finally appered on the day of our return to Tokyo. So we decided to take a full day to explore the area before going back to Tokyo. We enjoyed a ferry cruise on the Lake Ashi, a ropeway ride over the

mountain slope with a breathtaking view and the Owakudani, where the hot sulphorous steam is escaping from the high underground pressure.

We had such a great day thanks to  the cold but beautiful  weather before returning to Tokyo in the evening.

... and a great Japanese dinner.
