Hiking in the Swabian Alps

Lured by such beautiful coloured leaves and incredubly good weather for October, we went hiking twice in the nearby mountains, the Swabian Alps (“Schwaebische Alb”), once with a group of friends and once just on our own. Walking was 10-15 km each time. Along the way there were a lot to see and we had, indeed, lots of spectacular views...!

16/10/2005 Around Ochsenwang and Breitenstein (12 km)
Breath-taking view of the rocks and coloured leaves on the way
The fog is still covering the valley,
while it's cleaing up on the mountain...
Light breaks through...
Beautiful colours
We enjoyed a little break
 at a castle ruin...

Amazing view from Breitenstein rock, lots of sun, not that much of the way in the forrest.

30/10/2005 Around Liechtenstein Castle (15 km)
View into the valley from Liechtenstein Castle (left side)
Liechtenstein Castle in the sun

Nice castle at the begining, a long part of the way in the forrest, another long part on the free fields - gives you a bit of everything, especially on a nice clear autumn day.

Absolutely recommendable.

The hiking guide book we use:

“Wanderfuehrer Schwaebische Alb”, from Dieter Buck

A wide choice of very nice tours. However, the description is often not detailed enough and not reliable. On the second tour of this page the description was even irritating and made us take the wrong way first, loosing about half an hour. Definitely you should have a good hiking map in addition.
