Akan National Park is situated in the east part of Hokkaido island. It offers beautiful lakes, hot springs and mountains.

Iozan volcano is still active and the hot sulfurous steam escaping from its ground is the spectacular proof. The mountain can be seen from quite a distance and becomes quite spooky as you approach, with a hissing sound in the background.

down to the water edge and the water is deep blue.
You are lucky to be able to see the lake itself, as most of the time there is some persistent fog just covering up the water surface, which makes this unique lake even more mysterious.

Information

Lake Akan is home to the Marimo algae, a cute vivid green plant growing round like a ball. During a boat tour you will be able to visit a small island, where a small museum displays some living Marimos and explains about them. Besides, the lake offers some nice nature around the shore including the

interesting view of volcano- shaped mountains.
