The coastline of southeast Kyushu is the main attraction of the Nichinan Coast Quasi National Park, which features dramatic rock formations and lush, tropical foliage. Travelling in August, it was rather sultry, but luckily the hotel we stayed had a small but charming private beach in Nango, where we enjoyed the feeling of the sea water as well as a very good sea view from our room.

Cape Toi-misaki is located in the southernmost part of the Nichinan-kaigan Coast. Gentle hills extend, and you can observe wild horses, called Misaki-uma, living and grazing there. It is said that Misaki-uma are the descendants of army

horses left grazing and which became wild 300 years ago. They are now designated as a natural monument of the country. On the cliff, 225 meters above sea level, Toi-misaki Lighthouse stands, which commands a distant view as far as the O-sumi-hanto Peninsula on a fine day. At the top of the cape, Misaki-jinja Shrine stands at the end of the cape, which is known as the god of a talisman against sea disaster and for matchmaking.
Its tropical atmosphere is largely produced by the cycads growing wild in the area...

Udo-jingu Shrine at Cape Udo-misaki is a good example of many shrines with mythological back- grounds in Miyazaki Pref., such as Takachiho-jinja and Miyazaki-jinja. As one of the most famous Southern Kyushu sites, it fills the mouth of a cave nestled halfway down the edge of a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The red torii (a gate leading into a Japanese shrine) and arched bridges create a striking contrast up against the dark rock of the cave. According to legend, the Udo-jingu Shrine marks the spot where the father of Jimmu-tenno (first Emperor of Japan around 600BC) was born.

The Nichinan-kaigan Coast stretches for 120 km from Aoshima in Miyazaki City to Takamatsu in Kushima City. The coast varies greatly due to the erosion of the sunken Udo Mountains. The coast is known for its wave-cut terraces, created by the differing erosion patterns of the sand and mudstone. This unique feature is locally called gOni no sentaku-itah, which means gogrefs washing boardh, due to its resemblance to a huge

old-fashioned washingboard.
