Visit to Upper Bavaria

Welcomed by a duck
 at the lake Koenigssee

On the occasion of the 40th wedding anniversary of Rainer’s parents, we were invited to stay at a lovely old hotel in Frasdorf, a tiny Bavarian village near the lake Chiemsee, which was a very pleasant surprise. We enjoyed celebrating their anniversary over two superb dinners. The weekend stay turned out to be an excellent opportunity to experience the picturesque nature of Upper Bavaria, in the very south-west part of Germany, as well as to visit Salzburg in Austria, city of the great composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

St. Bartholomew

The highlight of our stay was a boat tour on the lake Koenigssee. Thanks to its crystal- clear emerald-green water and mystifying atmosphere deep in the nature, it’s often said to be the most beautiful lake in the country. Surrounded by soaring mountains,

the narrow and deep “King’s Lake” looks like a fiord in the Bavarian Alps. Koenigssee's landmark, the chapel of St. Bartholomew, can only be reached by boat. This famous church, originally built in the 12th century, lies at the tip of a picturesque peninsula.

At the far end of Koenigssee, another beautiful lake Obersee (= upper lake) is waiting to be explored. This lake was separated from Konigssee by a landslide. A 15-min walk from the nearest boat landing stage takes you to the scenery of the lake in its full splendour, including a waterfall. (You can also hike around Obersee along the edge to the far end.) Despite our bad luck with the weather, we enjoyed the tranquillity of the solem nature...
