Shinjuku

View from Shinjuku Gyouen
 towards the station

The area around Shinjuku station is very versatile. The station itself is the biggest in the whole country, used by approx. 2 mio. people every day. So here is always busy with plenty of business and leisure facilities around.
About 10 - 15 min. walk from the station you will find the building complex of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Its 243 m high twin towers used to be the highest archinecture

in the country for a while. You can enjoy one of the most spactaclar views over the city from its 45th floor. Not many other places offer this for free...!
Shinjuku is home to one of the nicest and biggest parks of Tokyo, Shinjuku Gyoen. Featuring several areas of different styles: Japanese, French, and English, this park is very attractive at any time of the year.
We also enjoyed its nice tropical green house with lots

of flowers blooming...

Shibuya

Some sideroad in Shibuya

The Shibuya area offers contrasts. It is very lively around the station and known for many trend-setting shops and people. As soon as the traffic light turns green, the huge scramble crossing is flooded with people. A typical crowded and loud place in Tokyo.

Making yourself feel home next to the rails

However, exploring the side roads by bicycle also leads you to quiet places, little roads where people have made themselves feel home.
Exploring Tokyo by bicycle is actually a good way in order to make most of your sight seeing. Everything is slowly passing and you can also focus on the little things which amaze you more than the big sights.

Shibuya awakes especially at night... see some pictures from a Japan trip in September 2007:

 buildings

Many things have changed in te area around Shinagawa station in the last few years. Today this area is a highly attractive working area, offering modern office space and lots of opportunities for eating and drinking. You can enjoy these in a very interesting modern architectural environment, including sculptures and green spots.
Shinagawa is also home to
Mitsubishi Motors, the company Rainer is

currently working for. Mitsubishi Motors is also running a showroom in the

Mitsubishi Motors' showroom

2nd floor of its headquarters building. From the building, when the sky is clear, you can see beautiful Mount Fuji, about 100 km away. A supurb view!

Togo Shrine Flea Market

01/2004

The flea market at Togo Shrine near Harajuku offers everything which other people want to get rid of.
It opens when normal people are still dreaming, such as 3 a.m., every 1st and 4th Sunday of the month. However, this is the time for the best buys and the real experts will turn up that early.
We had a long Sunday morning sleep and it was early afternoon when we were finally there, but still enjoyed it. Market stands are built up in the grounds of the shrine, with furniture just piling up next to the shrine’s structure, as seen in the photos...

 Jingu Gaien in Autumn

Leaves falling down

The seasons are very distinctive in Japan. It was a great “event” that we enjoyed the coloured leaves’ season in Tokyo.
From Aoyama Dori a tree-lined road goes towards Jingu Gaien Park. This street features plenty of Gingko trees, which turn into fabulous yellow in autumn. Thanks to their beauty we enjoyed a very nice little Sunday afternoon walk. These Gingko trees are only 10 minutes on foot from our apartment.

One of our first trips within Tokyo led us to Meguro, a district in the south of Tokyo.
In Meguro you can find many  shrines and temples, a huge banquet/event center (Meguro Gajo-en) with interesting interior architecture and most probably a Japanese wedding to watch, and two interesting parks, one especially for trees and another one for natural studies.
