Tsukiji Fish Market

You have to get up early to experience this amazement. The Japanese consume 12 million tons of fish and 300,000 tons of other seafood every year. This is the highest per head consumption of seafood in the world. One of the biggest

fish providers in Japan is Tsukiji fish market. Every morning from 5.30 a.m., here  becomes very, very busy, when the 1600 fish dealers open  their stands. You will be able to see all kinds of marine products, sometimes still alve in aquariums.

You would probably find most astonunding to see the huge tunas, absolutely loved in this country, lying in a line. They are sold in an auction, either deep frozen or freshly caught. Then they are transported to the individual stands where they are cut into pieces and sold to restaurants, shops and supermarkets. From 10 a.m. to noon, private people like us also can buy them at the retailersf stands.

Imperial Palace & Yasakuni Shrine

05/2004

The Imperial Palace is of course not open to the public. Ordinary people are allowed to enter only twice a year: on Emperorfs birthday (for greeting) and at New Year. However, the gardens around the palace are open and everybody is invited to see beautiful landscape and garden elements. Several different gates to the gardens also show the interesting architecture of former times.

North of the Imperial Palace you can find Yasukuni Shrine. This Shinto shrine gets featured in the media once in a while when a government member officially

Yasakuni Shrine

pays a visit this shrine, which is actually dedicated to the dead Japanese soldiers of all wars of the past. Due to Japanese governmentfs neglecting way of dealing with the war crimes committed by former Japanese army in the neighbouring countries in the past, those countries often see these visits as a provocation. Still, the shrine itself is an interesting one which seemed to be visited by many people all  the year round. Yasukuni shrine has its own homepage: http://www.yasukuni.or.jp

400 years old...

Just an example of some good escape from the loud and lively life of Tokyo. Although Roppongi is originally known for its nightlife and amusement spots,   in the middle of this district you can find plenty of little oases of quietness, like Hikawa Shrine. Its three Ginko trees, which are about 300 years old, are especially interesting.  Lovely to enjoy the atmosphere of a sunny afternoon, shown in these photos...

Yanaka is an area north of Ueno, one of the jewels  of Tokyo. A temple town, in which you see plenty of temples and shrines in all sizes, with very

nice gardens. The Jomyo-in-Temple with an impressive number of 15,000 Jizo statues on its ground and the Daienji Temple, small but very unique due to the fact that it also accomodates a Shintoist Shrine on its ground. All this made Yanaka a nice destination

for our walk in the sunny afternoon. We were lucky enough to do this walk during cherry blossom time - you can see that in our pictures...!

Aoyama, the part of the city we live in, is home to the biggest cemetery of Tokyo. You can also enjoy a nice quiet walk through this vast cemetary with more than 100,000 graves.  During the  cherry blossom season this normally tranquil place gets filled with

lots of cherry- blossom-lovers. The main alley of the cemetary is  lined up with plenty of cherry trees, which looks

like a blossom tunnel in spring.

Hanami Party

Ueno

Ueno is best known for the zoo. However, it offers attractions for every time of the year and all kinds of weather. When sunny,

you  will enjoy the park and the nearby temples and shrines. When raining you will probably have a look at the museums in Ueno park. The park is very popular with the gordinaryh Tokyo citizen. This is especially true for the time of cherry

blossoms, when the park offers lots of beautiful views. Check out the pictures for impressions!
