Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi

09/2007

Very near to Roppongi Hills, a huge shopping, living, and amusement center, Tokyo Midtown has recently opened - and it even amazes you again. When we left Tokyo in autumn 2004, it was still an enormous construction site. Now it has become a 570,000 sq meter-complex between Roppongi Hills and Shiodome, offering luxury shopping and especially a vast food court. Additionally, it includes lots of office space, the Suntory Museum of Art, a luxury hotel, a public garden area and an appartement house, both in the very interesting mixture of traditional and modern Japanese architecture.
Special feature: have your dog washed and treated while you are shopping - pets are not allowed in anyway!

The pictures might already imply: Shiodome is another one of these modern, trendy shop-restaurant-amusement- complexes of Tokyo.

However, it is worth a visit, just to watch how it is there - with live bands playing and many people on their way to dinner. The architecture is fantastic and you will see lots of interesting features around.
Donft forget to take a ride on the transparent high-speed lifts at the

Dentsu Building. You can also enjoy fantastic views over Tokyo from the restaurants on the upper floors of the building.

Asakusa

In Asakusa you can experience some real Japanese Buddhist culture. The area, centering around the magnificent Asakusa Kannon Temple, is also home to many traditional handcrafters. It still keeps some of the old facades of the past.
The Asakusa Kannon

Temple, (officially called gSensoujih), was found already in the 7th century, although todayfs buildings are not that old, as Asakusa area was destroyed during the WWII. On the narrow streets in the area, you find lots of interesting building and shops featuring goods for pilgrims. This extremely famous  temple attracts so many people visiting here to worship every day. Check out some impressions of the temple by clicking on the picture link!

Harbour view

Yokohama is Japanfs second biggest city. However, it seems to be just another suburb of Tokyo. You need about 30-40 minutes by train from Shibuya to get to Yokohama.

Pacifico Yokohama

After Japan opened itself to international trade again, one of the first settlements of large number of foreigners happened in Yokohama. This is evidenced by the old Christian graveyards and Japanfs biggest  China Town, etc.

Yokohama has always been a bit exotic to the Japanese -

due to the Western influence since the middle of the 19th century. If you walk through the residential area, you still can feel that atmosphere.
Today Yokohama is an attractive modern town. Although the huge harbour dominates the city, new buildings and on-going refurbishments are everywhere, including a number of huge architecture complex with hotels and shopping centres etc. as well as a new underground line, mostly as a result of the major and well-known re-development project called gMinato Mirai 21 Projecth in the bay area.
